June 1, 2020 – "A Deeper Meaning of Relaxation."

Soon after the killing of George Floyd, this week's Focus & Relax clarifies what I mean by "Relax." It doesn't mean getting a buzz, but rather learning how to abide in the present moment.

We have so many habitual ways of dealing with something raw and big by either suppressing it, de-complicating it, or just staying busy. Here we are using tools from the Alexander Technique and Buddhist meditation to learn how to hang in between conclusions and comfort.

It's not that the conventional definition of relaxation has no value; it's important for our nervous systems to be able to calm down so we can think straight and take care of ourselves and others. And it's especially important that we bring these teachings and opportunities to marginalized people who are in need of rest and repair.
